Step 1: Build Your Audience
So step number one is the step that most people skip, but actually is the most important and that is to build your audience. Any business in life, any business, whether it's in the United States or overseas online, brick and mortar doesn't matter, any business needs to be a clear solution to a clear problem. But you can't really know the solution to the problem you solve unless you have people to solve the problem for. So step number one is to build an audience of people online who wants to buy the types of shirts you want to sell. Now, the way that you do this is you create something called a lead magnet and you give it away for free to people in exchange for their email address. This builds your email list for you and allows you to have an entire database of people who are interested in the type of content you are going to sell in your t- shirt business. Step 2: Market Research
Now that you have your audience the second step is to design your first t- shirt to sell to them with their participation. This is called market research. And this is why it's so important to have your audience first because every audience is going to want something a little bit different. If you built an audience of people who love to go to the gym, then your first t- shirt is probably going to be something about going to the gym. If you built an audience of people who are entrepreneurs and like to be business casual when they go to work, then you're probably going to create a business casual work shirt. Your audience is going to determine the type of shirt you make. So make sure you involve them in the shirt creation process. Whenever I'm making a new shirt I always ask my girls like what are you interested in? What kind of shirts do you want? What kind of colors do you want? What kind of styles do you want? You want long sleeve, short sleeve? Do you want hoodies? Do you want jackets? Do you want sweatshirts and when you're involving them in the process now they feel like they're part of the shirt creation process too and they feel like it's their product.
Kim Kardashian did this all the time when she used to use audience for feedback in order to create her products? I mean, she still actually does it. She'll post something on Twitter and say: “which perfume bottle do you like better A or B”? And her millions upon millions of audience members will vote on it and then she'll choose the one that they vote on and now they feel like they're part of the product process too. Girl, involve your audience in the creation of your first shirt. Step 3: Create Shopify Account
Once you have designed your shirt, the third step is to go ahead and create your Shopify account. One great thing about Shopify is that they offer a free seven day trial. So if you time this properly, if you time this where you already have your audience in place, you have designed your shirt with your audience's participation so they're now anticipating the release of your shirt, you can actually start making sales during your free seven day trial so that your Shopify subscription literally pays for itself from the beginning. So time your sequence carefully so that you can get your Shopify account to pay for itself from the beginning. Okay, so you're gonna go for step number three, you're gonna want to create your Shopify account using that seven day free trial. Very simple. All you need is an email address. Just a heads up for any website online just to comply with legal issues are you know with what the law says every single website does need to list an address right.
So you don't want to use your personal email address, you don't want to use your personal home address for your online store, you want to go ahead and create a customer service email, and you want to create a vanity mailing address by going to the UPS Store and purchasing one of those or get yourself a post office box. That's what I use for my business. I just use a P.O. Box. Do not put your personal home address when you were registering your website.
Step 4: Install Print-On-Demand App
Once you have your Shopify store created, go ahead and connect and install the print-on-demand app. Shopify has quite a few apps that you can choose to run a print-on-demand business. So you can use Printful, you can use Printify, you can use Teescape, you can use Teelaunch, and those are just four options. I'm sure they're coming out with new ones all the time. So choose the print-on-demand app that you enjoy the most. I do recommend uploading your shirt designed to each app ordering it, seeing how you like the shipping speed the type of shirt that it is the quality of the material the smell. Some of these print-on-demand companies can kind of smell a little gluey, so make sure you order it and just test it out and figure out which shirt and style you like the best and go forward with that app.
Step 5: Create T- Shirt Collection
The fifth step is to create your t- shirt collection with the app once you have installed your print on demand app into your Shopify store. And I'll show you how to set that store up step by step my students Koroni and Brenda and so many others use this system to set up their stores in literally a day. It's so easy to follow. So definitely check that out. But you're going to go ahead and use the app that you chose and set up your T shirt collection. I do recommend having no more than three total shirts using the same exact design.
If you look at some of these really, really big t shirt Christian t- shirt businesses like Jesus is my homeboy. And then God is dope, you'll notice that they had one design that they saturated the market with before they started adding others to the collection. So I do recommend the design that you created with your audience. Use that one design on three different styles of shirts. So you have variation, you have a collection, like maybe you'll have a short sleeve, long sleeve and a hoodie or jacket or something like that. So there's variation, but don't put too many designs because a lot of times when we have too many options to choose from, we have FOMO and we just don't choose anything. We'd rather choose nothing, than choose the wrong thing. So only give them one design to choose from, and then put it on three different styles.
Step 6: Launch Your Store
Step number six once you have your t- shirt collection created on the app, go ahead and launch your Shopify store to your current audience. This is why we built our audience in step one because that means we already have an audience of people who are waiting to buy our shirt. Right before we even launch, we already have the audience. Now, let me tell you something. It is so easy to start a t- shirt business girl I'm telling you I've started t- shirt businesses and 10 minutes like, if you've been in the Google teacher business accelerator, you've literally seen me start a t- shirt business in 10 minutes, it's really easy to do. The difficult part is doing the marketing necessary to get sales for your t- shirt business. So if you spend the time building your audience first and don't build your audience only on social media, because social media algorithm can change tomorrow and you can lose your audience, build an email list that is an audience that you own.
Once you invest the time upfront to build your audience first, then as soon as you launch your collection, you already have a list of buyers waiting for it. Okay, so design your launch, and launch it to your current email list. Listen to what they're saying provide them feedback. Step 7: Create a Strategic Marketing Plan
And finally, step number seven. Now that you've launched your current audience, create a detailed strategic step-by-step marketing plan for how you're going to continue generating traffic to your t- shirt business. Any business is a solution to a problem. But you need to find people who have the problem that your solution solves. You need to find those people that's all marketing is; putting the right message in front of the right person at the right time they're looking for it. The right message is your T shirt business solves a specific problem. The right person is the person who has a problem at the right time that they're looking for when they're searching for it when they're on social media when they're watching a live stream when they're in a webinar. However you choose to do your marketing is fine. Just make sure you do your marketing. Marketing is the most important thing you're going to do as a Christian entrepreneur, you want to make sure you master it as soon as possible because you will not get sales in your t- shirt business. Unless you do marketing. There's no crossing my fingers. I hope I wish…No!!! You have to do marketing in order to generate sales in any business, not just a t- shirt business but you have to do marketing to generate sales, anywhere, anytime in any business. So make sure you create a detailed strategic step by step marketing plan for how you're going to do drive traffic to your brand new t- shirt website on Shopify. And again, whatever type of marketing strategy you choose, that's fine. Just be consistent, go all in, and continue driving traffic to your site.
