Don't Guess Products
Do not guess at the kind of t- shirt you should design. I've seen this happen so many times. Well- meaning Christian entrepreneurs figure out all the steps to create their own t- shirts, guess what they think the audience wants, and then spend all this time designing and launching this t- shirt collection that nobody wants to buy. Don't guess sister of Christ here at Godlywoodgirl, I never create a product unless somebody has already pre ordered it from me. That way, I'm not guessing what people want. I know exactly what they want because they've told me that they wanted it by pre ordering the product.

Don't copy somebody else.
Don't copy somebody else. I don't know what is going on online right now, I think it's because it's so easy to start a business right now. But the amount of people who copy me at Godlywoodgirl is insane. It's insane. They look at what I'm doing, and then they copy and start selling it in their own business. Here's the problem sis, you don't know how well that product sold for me. You don't know if it's actually moving, or if I just put that up for display for a project for example. You don't know. Don't copy somebody else because you don't know if that product is really working for them. Build your own audience, ask them what they want and serve it to them.

Don't order a ton of inventory
The third don’t is to not order inventory till you have an audience of people who want to buy your stuff online. I had a friend of mine who started his own t- shirt collection and he really did have these really cool shirts, and he worked for a t- shirt printing shop. So he was able to get a deal and he ordered all these shirts thousands of dollars’ worth of inventory before he had an audience of people to buy them. So, of course as his friends and family members, we purchased the shirts. Of course we wanted to support him, but once you sell to your family and friends, you just ran out of buyer’s right? So now you've got thousands of dollars’ worth of inventory in your hands and you're trying so hard to find people to buy them online. And eventually you get burned out and you put the shirts in storage and call it a day. Don't do that, okay? I don't want you to order inventory unless you have an audience of people who told you they're going to buy your stuff.
When I order inventory for Godlywoodgirl books, I only order the books that I know are selling every single month. I have 26 books that I have written here at Godlywoodgirl, not all of them sell every single month. That's why for the girls who are copying me womp womp womp you don't know which is actually moving which one's not? Yeah, I only order inventory for the ones that are actually selling. I never have inventory sitting at the end of the month. Never because I only order what sells so don't start ordering inventory until you have an audience. Now let's get into the three do of studying a Christian t- shirt business, right?

Do Build an Audience
The first do is to build an audience of people who want to buy from you before you design your t- shirt collection. Building an audience online is yes, one of the most tedious steps of building an online business but one of the most fundamental steps. If you look at Beyoncé, she doesn't just create an album and release it to random strangers. She releases it to her beehives, the people who are in her audience. If you look at Lady Gaga, she does pick concert dates in cities where she doesn't know anybody. No, she picks the cities where the little monsters live, her audience. If you look at Justin Bieber, he's not just creating a peril for random strangers who've never heard of him know he creates a peril for beliebers. I think it's so cute beliebers, beliebers and it's so cute. He creates a peril for beliebers, his audience online. Same thing for you.
Build your audience of people who want to buy from you sister of Christ. Do not just guess at who you're going to get to buy your shirts, build an audience of people online who want to buy from you and then create shirts for them. Design Your T- Shirt
The second do is to design your T shirts based off what your audience says that they want. Now, some people will build an audience online, and then never talk to them. And then they're constantly creating products and just trying to sell it to that audience. This is one of the biggest mistakes I see influencers make. And I watch YouTube all the time. I love YouTube, I'm addicted to them. I love it. And I see it happen all the time. People who have built these platforms have 500,000 a million subscribers, and then they just start selling the random product that people don't buy. Don't do that. Ask your audience what they want from you, and then make them what they said they want. This is called market research. In the very beginning of my business, I used to guess what my audience wanted and I would write these books and create these courses based off what I thought my audience needed, I struggled to make sales.
Now what I do is I use the purpose profit formula, which is where I asked my audience what they want, I pre sell what they told me they want to them. And once they have actually ordered it, they've actually exchanged money to preorder it, then I make the product because they have shown me by their dollars that they actually want it. So now every product that I make here at Godlywoodgirl, somebody has already paid me for. It's an incredible business model. And this is what I want you to do. Don't just build your audience and ignore them. Ask them what they want. And if you're saying: well, Stephanie, how do I ask them”, send them an email and say: “hey, I want to create t shirts for you what kind of shirts do you want”? That's it. Let them tell you what shirts they want. And now you build shirts based off what your audience told you that they want.

Use Print-on-demand
And do number three, which is one of the most important do's do number three is do us a print on demand business model. When I first started selling t shirts, I think 2011 maybe 2010 I would order the box of blank t shirts, design it using illustrator I created what's called a vector file. Take that design in the blank t shirts to a local t shirt printer, they would print all the shirts give me like 100, 200 shirts, I would take that box back to my house and then when somebody ordered from me online, I would go ahead and put the shirt into plastic, put it into a shipping box and ship it out.
Praise love Jesus in 2019, you don't need to do this anymore. There are tons of print-on-demand business models you can use for your t- shirts. Print-on-demand means you only print a shirt when somebody buys the shirt. That's what it means its print on demand. It's only printed when somebody buys it. This means that you are holding zero dollars of inventory. And this means that you don't even have to do anything except for design and market your shirts.
So I use Shopify and Printful for my print-on-demand t- shirts. I have Shopify that I pay $29 a month for. And then I installed the Printful app into Shopify and design my shirts on Printful. So now when somebody orders the shirt on Shopify notifies Printful, Printful charges, my credit card, the cost of printing the shirt and the inventory for the shirt, they print the shirt, they design it, they ship that shirt, sorry, they print the shirt, they package it up, and they ship that shirt to the customer. Shopify then deposit into my account, the money the customer paid for the shirt. So as long as I price the shirt at a higher amount than what it cost me to have Printful print the shirt for me, I make a profit. I never touch anything except for marketing and design. That's it. It's incredible. It's an incredible way to have a t- shirt business in 2019. Now there are some downsides to print on demand and that the biggest downside you're going to have is the cost of each t shirt.
So if you print your own shirts at home and have them at home and ship at home, it's gonna probably cost you for five bucks per shirt, right? If you use print on demand, it's gonna cost you about $15 per shirt. But to me, it's a benefit because I don't have to worry about printing, I don't worry about quality control, I have to worry about inventory, nothing. I just have to think about marketing the shirt and designing the shirt. That's it. So do use a print on demand business model, you can use Printful, Teespring, Teelaunch, Teescape, or Spreadshirt. It's free upfront, you don't have to pay anything until you actually sell the shirt. And it's a great way to step into this world of entrepreneurship with no startup capital.
