Step 1: Identify The Problem You Solve With Your Book.
The first step is to identify the problem that you are going to solve with your book. Any business needs to be a clear solution to a clear problem. So, you want to know the problem that your book solves before you even start writing it. I know a lot of people who when writing an e-book, just want to share their story and that is it. That is great if you just want to write your e-book to a journal. If, on the other hand, you want to make sales, then every product needs to be a solution to a problem.
People do not just buy journals. They buy solutions to problems so you will have to be clear on the problem that your e-book is going to solve. This is called your niche. What industry are you in? What are you providing a solution for?
Step 2: Build An Audience Of People Who Have The Problem You Solve.
Now that you know the problem you are solving with your e-book, you need to build an audience of people who have the problem that you solve. For a lot of us Christian entrepreneurs, we forget that in business, we need to do marketing. You cannot make sales with your business without letting people know of the products that you have created to solve their problems. So, when we spend all this time and energy into creating this e-book, once we launch it on Amazon.com or your website, it may be pretty discouraging when you do not get any sales right off the bat.
I have been there several times. Praise God I have now written 26 books and in the beginning, I would publish a book and there were crickets! Nobody was buying and the reason for that was I did not have an audience. I had nobody who knew who I was, nobody who knew the problem that solved and nobody who knew me as an expert solving that problem. I had a lot of trouble at the beginning of selling my books.
Now, praise Jesus, I have an email list. They know me as the Purpose Coach. They know me as the girl who helps people find their purpose. So, when I release an e-book, printed book, or journal, I have a built-up audience who are ready to buy it. They know me as that expert. So, I want to reverse the process for a lot of Christian entrepreneurs in 2020. Instead of writing the e-book and finding an audience to buy it, let us build that audience first and write the e-book to solve that audience’s problem. So, build an audience first before you start working on your e-book.
It is okay to build your audience while you are writing your e-book. That is even better because then, you give your audience a behind-the-scenes look as you develop your e-book. You must start building your audience pretty much before you start writing your e-book.
The way to build an audience online is to create something called a Lead Magnet. It is a free digital program that you give to someone in exchange for their email address. Create your lead magnet and then use social media marketing to put it in front of people who have the problem that you solve with your e-book. See where I am going? Now, they give you their email address in exchange for this e-book. And now, you have a database of the email address of people who have the problem that you solve with your e-book. Step 3: Ask Your Audience Their Number Question
Having built an audience, you are going to ask them the number one question that they have about the problem you solve. This, my friend, is called Market Research. It is how you create an e-book that is a clear solution to your current audience’s problem. Every audience has different needs and different wants. If I’m writing an e-book on fitness and my audience is a busy entrepreneur who only has an hour a day to work out, her questions will be completely different from an 18-year-old who has 8 hours a day. Different questions.
One has an hour, the other has all day. You would have to be sure of what your current audience wants in your e-book. The problem that they have that you can write an e-book that solves those problems for them.
Step 4: Create Product Tiers Based on Your Audience’s Questions.
Once you know their number one question, it is now time to create what I call Product Tiers. These are different product offers at different financial price points. For example; tier 1 products are usually lead magnets that you give away for free in exchange for somebody’s email address. Tier 2 products are usually “tripwire offers”. This is a low-cost offer that you give to somebody that is usually an easy “yes”. It is an easy upgrade from the gift. One thing about McDonald's is that even French fries can be a tripwire offer.
Tier 3 products are your core product offers. These are more of a premium-priced point and these are where you start to see profit in your business. You do not want to only offer tripwire products inside of your business because it is really difficult to make profits that way. If I am selling $7 e-books all day, it will take me a while to get to $1000 in sales. But if I’m selling a $1000 course, I only need to sell one to make my $1000 sale.
You will have to make sure that you have products in each category. I am going to give you a heads up. Your lead magnet should be that gift that you give to people to build your email list as we discussed. Your tripwire offer is to going to be your e-book. You see how nicely that fit in there? Your tier 3 should be an online course, a coaching program, some premium offer that you give as a part of your e-book. This is because you are going to use your e-book to presell your premium offer. This is how you use your e-book to make money online as a Christian entrepreneur in 2020. Use the e-book to presell a premium offer.
Step 5: Write Your E-Book to Presell Your Offer
Once you have created your product offers, you are going to write your e-book in a way that answers the question your audience asked you as well as presells your premium offer. If I am writing a book about “How to Edit a Video” my audience is 25-year-old college graduates who have not entered the workforce, have 8 hours a day, and want to be freelance editors. Let us say their most important question is “what is the best platform that I can use to edit videos?” their second question is: “where do I find clients to edit for?” and their third question is: “how do I creatively edit my projects to attract clients?”
Let us say that those are the three questions so I am going to write my e-book to answer those three questions. I am going to answer them and say: “If you want to take the next step by taking my online course where I show you step-by-step with visual details about where to get clients, creatively edit your videos to attract those clients to you, click here to join my online course where I will show you how to do it.” Even though the book explains it, a lot of people are visual learners. A lot of people want to take the next steps.
That is why I keep making these YouTube videos explaining how to write an e-book. A lot of guys do want to see the process. That is why I created the Godlywoodgirl Author Toolkit because it shares my screen with you, showing you the step-by-step process of how I built an e-book so you can follow along too.
You can go like: “oh, she clicked there let me click this button too. She downloaded that file so let me download that file. Oh, she formatted it this way. Let me format it this way as well”. It is completely different to see it than to read it. That is why e-books are such a beautifully organic way to sell premium offers. You would have to write your e-book in a way that answers the questions your audience has that presells your premium offer as well.
Step 6: Launch Your E-Book to Your Current Audience
Now that you have written your e-book to presell your premium offer which happens to be the solution to the problem your audience has, the next step is to launch your e-book to your current audience. This is why in the very beginning, we built our audience. That way, you do not finish your e-book without having anyone to sell to. You already have an audience of people who have the problem you solve with your e-book. They were part of this process of writing your book because you asked them questions and their opinions. At this point, you just have to launch that book to your audience.
Step 7: Create A Detailed Marketing Plan.
After your initial launch, do not stop talking about it. Create a detailed marketing plan for how to continue driving traffic to your e-book. The initial launch is just where you get your initial momentum, testimonials, and customer feedback, fantastic!
Now, you want to keep that momentum going. Create a marketing plan for how you will continue finding people for the problem you solve with your e-book. Continue finding those people and direct them to buy your e-book. Create a detailed marketing plan, outlining this step-by-step. Do not hope, do not wish, do not repeatedly chant: “I hope! I hope!! I hope!!!” that people will buy my e-book.
Get detailed, get tactical. Create a step-by-step marketing plan to drive the market to your e-book. Any business, no matter where it is or how long it has been out, needs to do marketing to make sales. There is no magic button! We all have to do this to generate sales in our business. As such, get committed to doing consistent marketing to drive traffic to your e-book. That way, you are always able to offer that premium offer to people who need you to help them solve that problem.
