So here at the Godlywoodgirl, the Lord has allowed me to write and self-publish 26 books. Now I’ve only been in business since 2014 so that is a lot of books to write in just that amount of time. The reason why, praise God, I have been able to write that many is because I write a lot of my books in less than one day. The fastest I’ve written a book is 2 hours and honestly, I love the process. This is so because a lot of writing a book quickly involves the prep work. When I sit down to write a book, I have already completed all the necessary prep work. So when I finally sit down, I can just get it done. I don’t have to go back, I don’t have writer’s block neither do I have to research anything like that. I already know exactly what I’m writing and it is just a matter of sitting down, clocking out the hours, and just getting it done.
These are the four steps that I am going to teach you in this video. It involves how to do that prep work so that when you sit down to write your book, you just get it done.
Step 1: Get Clear about the Topic of Your Book
Step one is to get clear on what your topic is for your book. Every book that you write needs to be a clear solution to a clear problem. People do not buy books just for fun. People buy books to get solutions to their problems. So, if you are not clear on the problem you are trying to solve with your book, it is going to be hard to get your book done. Listen, sis, there’s a lot of things that we can include in these books, okay?
I can write a 1000 paged long book about sales funnels because I love them so much. However, when I’m writing a book about sales funnels, I need to be clear on the solution that I am providing with my book. What is the problem that I am solving? So, for example, if the problem that I am solving with the book about sales funnels is: “I am helping people who have a t-shirt business, learn how to launch a sales funnel to increase their profit margin”, that is a clear problem that I am solving. So all the information that I have about how authors can use sales funnels, how coaches can use sales funnels, how real estate agents can use sales funnels should not go in this book. Why? This book solves a specific problem for people with a t-shirt business.
So, you need to get extremely clear on the problem that you are solving with your book. Ask yourself: “What is the book actually about”? That is going to give you clarity on what goes into the book so you do not get a writer’s block.
Step 2: Create the Outline for Your Book
Once you know the problem that you solve, you now need to create your outline. The outline for the book is actually what takes me the longest. I can write a book in 2 hours but the time it takes me to create the outline for the book is about a week. I spend my time figuring out a clear solution to the problem that I solve. Solution A, solution B, solution C, solution D, I order everything out. I make sure that I am telling stories about each solution. I also make sure that I am giving out solutions from the easiest to hardest to apply. I make sure that I am structuring it with a clear beginning to an end.
I spend time on that outline. The great thing about creating an outline before you sit down to write your book is that it tells you exactly what goes into each section. You do not have to say: “I need to do research here”, “should I add a story there?” or “what should I fill inside here?” Nah, sis, when you spend a good amount of time creating your outline so you know exactly what goes into your book, it helps you get that book done so fast. So, create your outline to know exactly what is going on in each part of the book. Step 3: Block Out Your Calendar to Write Your Book
The third step is to block out your calendar to write your book. Here is where you are going to find the most resistance. The enemy is good at getting us to procrastinate on our goals and our dreams. The enemy is good at distracting us from actually taking actions. I am telling you, sis. Something is going to come up the minute you decide to sit down to write your book. I guarantee it. Something is going to come up. Somebody is going to call you, some friend that you haven’t seen in like forever is going to be in town. Someone is going to call you saying: “I need your ear”, something is going to happen which is going to distract you.
If you are not prepared for it, you may end up saying: “okay, I know was going to sit down and write the book today but I’m just going to write for 3 hours and move on”. No! Block out a day where you are going to spend the entire day working on your book. If you have to book an Air BnB and put your phone on airplane mode just so people do not contact you, do it! Block out a day to get your book done.
Once you have that outline all that is left is for you to write your book. That is it. Block out a date. Take a look at your calendar and figure out when you do not have any deadlines for work when no one has a birthday dinner or things that you have to go to when there are no events at the church. Figure out a date when you can spend an entire day working on this book and block it out on the calendar.
Step 4: Sit Down and Write Your Book
Finally, step four; now that you have your topic, your outline, and you know exactly when you are going to write this book, sit down and write your book. Go from beginning to end. Do not go backward. I know a lot of times when we are writing a book, we usually want to go back and fix things like: “you know what, in chapter 2 I should have mentioned this”. No sis.
The only way you are going to get your book done in one day is to keep moving forward. What I like to do when I’m working on a book is that I have what is called a ‘Do it later’ list. As I am writing out the book and getting all the content out according to the outline if an idea comes to my head for something that I have already completed, I write it on my ‘do it later’ list and I keep finishing my book. This is how you are going to get your book done in one day. You do not go back to fix anything. Your goal is to get that outline into a first draft in one day. Keep moving forward, don’t pause, don’t go backward, sit down, and get your book done.
